In today’s fast-paced world, staying connected is not just a convenience, it’s a necessity. Whether you’re at home, running a business, or on the move, having a reliable and portable network setup is crucial. This is where the concept of a portable off-grid network comes into play, offering flexibility and connectivity wherever you go. Let’s dive into how you can create a portable network using Starlink for internet connection and a suite of Ubiquiti products.

The Heart of the Network: Ubiquiti Dream Machine SE

At the core of our portable network is the Ubiquiti Dream Machine SE. This powerful router runs the full suite of Ubiquiti network applications, with a focus on Network and Protect for Cameras. It’s equipped with a single drive slot for video storage, making it an efficient and compact solution for your networking needs.

Portable Network Rack: Ubiquiti Toolless 6U Mini Rack

To house all the necessary devices, we utilize the Ubiquiti Toolless 6U Mini Rack with Lockable Casters. This rack not only provides a secure and organized space for your equipment but also ensures portability with its lockable casters.

Rack Components:

  1. Dream Machine SE (1U): The central unit for network management.
  2. USW Pro 24 Port POE Switch (1U): Provides Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities and numerous ports for device connectivity.
  3. USW Aggregation Switch (1U): Enhances network capacity and throughput.
  4. Ubiquiti Power Distribution Pro (2U): Positioned at the back for power supply management.
  5. CyberPower 1500va Battery Backup (1U): Ensures uninterrupted power supply, crucial for maintaining network stability.

Connectivity:

For seamless connections between these 1U devices, we use 10G DAC Cables. Additionally, for external cabling, the choice is InfiniteCables.com Slim Cat6e Patch Cables, known for their reliability and performance.

Wireless Equipment: Ubiquiti Access Points

For wireless connectivity, any Ubiquiti access points can be employed, but for this setup, we are integrating the U6 Mesh and the U6 Enterprise. These provide robust and expansive wireless coverage, suitable for both home and business environments.

Battery Backup: CyberPower 1U 1500va

To guard against power outages and ensure continuous operation, we incorporate the CyberPower 1U 1500va Battery Backup. This compact yet powerful unit is a crucial component of the off-grid network.

The Brain of the Operation: Dell Optiplex Micro Plus with Windows 11 Pro

For managing and accessing the network, a Dell Optiplex Micro Plus with Windows 11 Pro is utilized. This compact and powerful computer allows for VPN access and remote management, ensuring that you can control and monitor your network from anywhere.

Conclusion: Expanding Possibilities

This portable off-grid network setup, powered by Starlink for internet connectivity, is not just a solution for on-the-go needs. It can easily be expanded to power a home or a business, providing a versatile and scalable networking solution. Whether you’re in a remote location or simply need a reliable backup network, this configuration offers both mobility and performance, ensuring you stay connected in any scenario.
